I’ve been driving a 2014 4Runner, but I’m seriously considering upgrading to the new Honda Passport Trailsport. I appreciate that Honda stuck with a V6 instead of going the hybrid route like the new 4Runner. Really curious to see how the power compares!

I think it kind of depends on what you want out of it. While I'm still waiting for it to arrive, I ended up going with the Passport. My choice came down to the way I expect to use this vehicle. For me, there were a couple of factors. First, the lack of fold-flat seats in the Toyota. I occasionally sleep at trailheads, and it's nice to be able to roll up late and just sleep in the vehicle. Obviously, you could either build or buy something to deal with the half-foot difference between the cargo floor and seat backs in the 4Runner, but I didn't want to have to deal with putting that in and out of the vehicle and having to store it when not in use.

The other deciding factor for me was the lack of a center differential in the off-road-oriented 4Runners. I live in Colorado, and a lot of our winter driving involves mixed snow, ice, and dry pavement (mountain canyons). I've found part-time 4WD to be a hassle in such situations (you don't want to damage the vehicle by running it in 4WD on dry pavement, but dang, 4WD is sure nice to have on the slick stuff). You can get a center differential in road-oriented 4Runners (e.g., the Limited or the Platinum), but these vehicles come with low-profile wheels and tires that you'll likely want to swap out if you plan on doing much off-roading. Obviously, if you live in the South, this would be a non-issue.

Anyway, just a few things to think about...

I've had a three 4Runners over the years but mostly when I live that West and we used to get together and go out rock climbing and desert running and all that. But I didn't go anywhere where a passport could not have gotten through..... So in that regard unless you're doing extreme rock climbing I hope you don't really need the 4Runner. The 4Runner was a slug it was heavy loud.

I would say even against the new 4Runner of the passport is a winner and that's not even talking about the six cylinder versus the turbo......... The 4Runner is always an off-road vehicle the passport is classy street ride as well one ticket...... The interior of the 4Runner is way too chunky but it's off road you know.........
