Engine Break in

Hi Everyone,
I did a quick search but didn't find anything that discussed engine break in for brand new Passport Trailsport's/Elites, so I apologize if I missed any previously existing threads.

My question is, are there any specific rules for properly breaking in the new engine. Back in the day they would say not to go over 55 for the first 1000 miles, but that went the way of the Dodo bird a while back. However, I don't want to be presumptuous, so I wanted to reach out to the group for advice.

I went back and forth with Honda tech support for easily a month, and nobody there could tell me if there was any reason not to change the oil before their 7000 mile recommendation. Could NOT get an answer. They didn't know and they couldn't find out. So, I sent a message to HondaPro Jason about the first oil change. This got "lost in the mail" so I didn't hear back from him for months. I'm grateful to him for following up when he discovered my message. In the meantime, I had changed my oil at 1500 miles. When he finally got back to me he advised not to change the oil until 5000 miles because the oil from the factory had special additives. Well, too late for me, but hopefully this message helps someone else.

I would have done it a 1000 miles except that Honda tech support was sincerely trying to get me an answer and that pushed me out to 1500 when I gave up on them. (And gently and appreciatively told them so.) I think maybe if Jason had gotten back to me with that answer before the first oil change I *might* have listened. At the very least, I would have had my mechanic put a bottle of Moly in with the change.

I don't think it would hurt it either way. I've just seen so much metal in early oil changes (at least in the past) that it always makes sense to me to do one early.

Normally, I wouldn't have gone past 1000 miles, but there was so much controversy out there . . . then all the delays from Honda tech support . . . and when I finally got an answer, it was too late to slow me down. I'm sure it will be fine. ;-)

I would normally have changed the oil at 1000, but there was this controversy going. So, it ended up being delayed to 1500. Then I changed it again at 3000 and again at 5000. I'll likely hit it again at 10,000 or maybe a little earlier and then every 5000 or so for the duration. So, I'm with you. I've heard a lot of good things about Amsoil lately. Would you like to eleborate on that?

I’ve seen this posted before. With no source information. I’ll believe it when there is an official Honda document. I know manufactures may use moly grease to coat bearings. Rings should be seated within 300-500 miles. Either way I’m going to do what has worked for 50 years unless someone can prove me wrong.
